Luke 6:46 - 49

Luke 6:46 - 49

46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[c] 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Receiving, reading, researching, remembering, and reflecting on the Word of God are all useless if we fail to put them into practice. We must become doers of the word (James 1:22).

We fool ourselves when we assume that just because we have heard or read or studied a truth, we have internalized it.

The best way to become a doer of the Word is to always write out an action step as a result of your reading or studying or reflecting on God’s Word. Develop the habit of writing down exactly what you intend to do.

This action step should be personal (involving you), practical (something you can do), and provable (with a deadline to do it).

    My 2 cents:

I think Jesus is repeating a pattern in the entire sermon. That is His message has levels of depth that apply to us all, with the first level having to do with the initial entrance into His Kingdom.

In this case, Jesus is telling us that we need to accept and put into practice His words or final destruction (death) will overtake us suddenly. For those of us who passed through that initial gate (initial repentance and acknowledgement of Jesus' Lordship), there are more words from Jesus. In some cases, we hear Jesus' words and don't put them into practice in certain areas of our lives. In those particular areas, in which we build our shed on a foundation of sand, a storm is going to come and knock it over - a happenstance that God delights in, yet at the same time feels our pain.

In those areas of our lives where we are in obedience to God, we hardly notice things that would be storms in other people's lives. What we don't think of as a big deal would be a crisis of faith in other people's lives.

As Lenski says "Only when we do what Jesus says, of course by his grace and help, is he really our Lord, and are we truly his disciples, good trees bearing good fruit. Mere prodigality in calling Jesus “Lord” is no ticket of admission to heaven."

Jesus' point is that if one truly hears and heeds His words, they will experience a change in their hearts and in their attitudes and actions. He has just described bad "fruit" of those who are not genuine followers. And they are not "doers" because they lack the supernatural power (the Spirit) to obey Jesus' words.

Jesus is Lord. Period! We do not make Him Lord! To profess to believe and fail to obey is a false profession that will take a soul to hell. When we receive Jesus as Savior, we receive the "full package," so to speak, Jesus Christ the Lord.

Lord (master, owner)(2962) (kurios) is a title which signifies Jesus is sovereign in power and has absolute authority. In a word they are saying Jesus is their absolute owner! But they either lie (overtly) or are self-deceived, because their actions (lifestyle) demonstrate that they are "lord" of their life, not Jesus. Lordship demands Obedience!

To lay aside pride and self-righteousness, to crucify the rebellious flesh, to put on the mind of Christ, to take up the cross daily, to count all things but loss for Christ’s sake,—all this may be hard work. But, like the house built on the rock, such religion will stand.

As noted above, "doers" are not saved by their "doing" but they "do" because they believe and as genuine believers they have the supernatural power (the indwelling Spirit) to "do." Even more deceptively dangerous, is a profession of belief in Christ and failure to "do" or obey Christ! take heed because Jesus is describing your eternal destiny in this passage.

And the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great - In context the torrent bursting against the house is a picture of God's judgment of all who are not safe in the "Ark" of Christ when the "torrent" of God's holy wrath "bursts" forth at the Great White Throne Judgment (see Rev 20:12-15-note).

As was illustrated in the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matt. 13:24-30), false believers are often indistinguishable from true believers until judgment comes and sweeps their self-righteous religious edifice away. But when the flood and torrent of divine judgment and fury burst against each house the results were dramatically different.

As you consider the man who built his house without a foundation, you have to ask, “Why would he do such a dumb thing?”

    1. he followed the path of least resistance. Disobedience is usually much easier than obedience.
    2. he wanted the immediate benefits of the house without the necessary labor and time to build it correctly. They like the love and fellowship of the body. But in their private lives, they are not digging the foundation of obedience to God’s Word.
    3. he was short-sighted. He was living for the here and now, without thought for the future.

Conclusion - What can we do to make sure that our house is built on the rock of obedience to Christ, not on the sand? Jesus mentions three things (Lu 6:47): Come to Him, hear His words, and act on them.

  5. Questions and findings:

    1. Is this a story of salvation? Or just how life on this earth works?

It is a story of salvation, and it is how life on this earth works. If we don't build our foundation on Christ, we are not saved and we will be subject to God's judgment on Judgment Day.

When we do build our foundation on Christ, because we still live in a fleshly body, we will sin. Many times our sin will be the sin of idolatry, which is trusting in other things besides God. It's sort of like having the original house built on the Jesus' foundation, but we add additions to our house that are built on sand. When the storms of this life come, it will tear our home additions down leaving just the original house. God is delighted but we are devastated. All we are left with is the old, simple, beautiful, original house.

That we build our own additions is a given (and inexcusable). When the storm comes, may we never be caught in the additions, but have enough sense to retreat to our refuge.
